The largest solar power plant in the world has commenced operations in the United Arab Emirates
The country's energy strategy aims to derive 44% of its energy from clean sources by 2050, with 38% from gas, 12% from coal, and 6% from nuclear energy.
The United Arab Emirates has launched the Al-Dhafra solar power plant. It stands as the largest single-site solar power station globally, boasting a two-gigawatt capacity and situated just 22 miles (35 km) from Abu Dhabi. It comprises nearly four million bifacial solar panels capable of powering almost 200,000 homes and annually reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2.4 million tons.
During the construction peak, 4,500 jobs were created, and batteries were installed at a rate of 10 megawatts per day.
With Al-Dhafra operational, the UAE's solar energy production capacity has surged to 3.2 gigawatts. The country aims to triple its renewable energy capacity to 14 gigawatts by 2030.
This power plant project was a collaboration involving the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), French energy firm EDF Renewables, and Chinese solar developer JinkoPower. TAQA holds a 40% stake in the project, while the other partners each own 20%.
